5 Fall Family Bucket List Items in Michigan
Fall is our family’s favorite time in Michigan. With the return of school and football, this season has our family craving outdoor adventures, orchards, pumpkins, and lots of fun crafts. While it is a busy time with school activities and fall sports, we love checking fun things off our fall bucket list on the weekends.
1. Flu Shot
As any parent with kids in daycare or school can attest, the fall also brings the return of runny noses and illnesses. October is the perfect time to add getting your annual flu shot to your fall bucket list. I recently got mine and feel prepared for what the colder temps ahead will bring. The flu shot is safe and effective, and recommended for everyone over six months. Our pediatrician recommends an annual flu shot for our kids, and we choose to get one for ourselves as well.
2. Fall Color Tour
There are so many great spots to take in the changing landscape this season brings within the Great Lakes State. Our boys love watching the trees in our wooded neighborhood change in the fall months, pointing out their favorites on our way to daycare and school. For a dedicated leaf peeping experience, the Tunnel of Trees just north of Harbor Springs is incredible! We also like to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes and take the tour through the national park, complete with bag lunches from Cheese Shanty in Leland.
With Leo in Kindergarten, he recently had his first field trip (and bus ride!) His class visited Robinette’s orchard and learned all about the different kinds of apples grown in Michigan. We also love to visit Schwallier’s in Grand Rapids. The boys love picking out their own apples on papa’s shoulders, petting the goats, and going on a hayride. For a day trip, Crane’s Orchard in Fennville is such a fun experience. Crane’s offers hayrides, wine tasting, apple and pumpkin picking, and lots of great photo opportunities.
4. Frederik Meijer Gardens
We love visiting the gardens all times of the year, and make the most out of our membership. It is especially fun in the fall. One of our family’s fall bucket list items is visiting Frederik Meijer Gardens and finding the giant pumpkins. Leo and Warren love to try to jump between them or hide behind them. My favorite part of the gardens this time of year are the beautiful, vibrant mum displays inside and sprawling through the outdoor paths.
5. Fall Family Photos
I always put family photos on my fall bucket list. Not only is it a beautiful time for outdoor photos, taking them now also means we have an updated family picture to send out for a holiday card. This year, we took ours on the covered bridge in Ada.
