We’re so excited to take you on the process of buying our next home! If you’ve been thinking of moving, now may be the time for you! I’m sharing all of the programs and resources the Michigan State Housing Development Authority has to offer Michigan residents and how MSHDA makes the home buying process easy.
It’s been four months since we sold our last house, but we’re ready to put down our roots once again! We’ve been renting in Ann Arbor this winter, which has allowed us to experience living on the east side. As sales reps covering large territories, both Canan and I have enjoyed being closer to key customers in Michigan. We’ve loved experiencing a new city, new restaurants, and all of the diversity it has to offer. We’ve been using this time to think intentionally about our next steps as a family, and where we want to be as Leo is ready to start school this coming fall. Plus, we’re project people, and we just can’t stay away from home DIY’s for long!
Our daily home search had us looking all over Michigan. We were considering Northville, Novi, Ann Arbor, Plymouth, as well as contemplating East Grand Rapids, Ada, and Cascade. Key decision factors for us were school districts, proximity to work, cost of living, and distance to friends and family.
This is the third home we’re purchasing, having bought and sold two homes in Grand Rapids over the past few years. As our family grows, our wants and needs in a home have also been changing. We love walking to shops and restaurants, but now value the function of a garage and backyard even more. We are so excited about the home and neighborhood we are moving into. This will even be our first home with air conditioning!
I get a lot of questions about how we manage buying, remodeling, and selling homes while also working full-time and raising two little boys. Although it hasn’t always been easy or gone as planned, we’ve learned a lot along the way! We have a lot of passion for home design and love to create a beautiful space within our budget, which often means getting creative and resourceful. One of the best tips I have is to educate and plan beyond pretty spaces and paint colors. Educating yourself on the home buying process so you can set yourself up for successful homeownership, whether for a starter home or forever home, is truly invaluable.
Home Buying with MHSDA:
Beyond settling on location, many other aspects of the home buying process can feel overwhelming, especially to first time buyers, but it doesn’t need to be that way! The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) helps to make Michigan a place where all Michiganders have affordable, quality housing. The homebuying process is easy with MSHDA as they provide a variety of programs and services to make the process simple, including loans with down payment assistance of $7500!
I’m going to let you in on a secret I’ve been telling all my friends. With historically low interest rates, now is a great time to move from renting to owning your own home. Home buying with MSHDA is super easy. MSHDA helps Michigan residents become educated, confident, and successful homeowners by offering courses and personalized counseling. If you’re worried about your credit, unsure of which type of loan to pursue, or need help understanding all of the different acronyms like PMI and FHA, MSHDA is there to help. You can learn more about MSHDA’s resources and how they can help you personally by checking out their website.

I already have a lot of ideas for transforming this space. We move in a few weeks and can’t wait to get started!
We are in love with the large backyard and can’t wait to see our boys playing back there.
The screened in patio and deck will be perfect for parties and entertaining.
