I found my house on Zillow at 2 a.m. one night this past May. I emailed my realtor, who set up a walkthrough the next day on my lunch break. I knew houses were going fast, as I’d been too late to many in my neighborhood already in my search. There was so much interest in this house, they held an impromptu mini-open house right before I got there, just hours after it was listed.
I had my search narrowed to a 4 block radius (like a crazy person) and drove the streets often this Spring, admiring the eclectic neighborhood, restaurant scene, and architecture of each house. This was the exact street I wanted to be on. I stepped in the entry and immediately told my realtor to write the offer.
It makes sense for the house tour and DIY makeover to start there. I’m so excited to share the progress of my home so far with you (and would love your décor and design suggestions as well!)

I chose Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter for the walls, a color I had painted in my previous rental and loved. However, I had it mixed by Sherwin Williams, and they did a great job! For those considering paint-matching, I would definitely recommend it and couldn’t tell a difference whatsoever. I will say, this is the one room in the house that I hired out for painting (due to the two-story height of the entry and sloped ceiling.) However, there was a lot of spackling and sanding that needed to be done first!
The hutch is one of my favorite pieces. I purchased it for just $35 at an estate sale in Saugatuck last summer and my dad sanded, painted, and refinished it in a crisp white. The right hand drawer features a lion pull. The vases are a mixture of Target (sold out. similar) and West Elm and the print was found at West Elm, a collaboration with a local purveyor. (Flowers from the wonderful boyfriend.)
The old chandelier was replaced with this steel one with mercury glass found on Wayfair. I loved the contemporary look mixed with old world rustic influence. The fun rug in greens and blues and yellows, a mixture of colors found throughout the house, was found at Home Goods (my go-to source for rugs.)
My favorite feature of the entry way is this pair of stained glass windows. They give off beautiful light and reflection into the living room in the daytime.
It looks fantastic! Congratulations on a job very well done!
Oh my goodness that stairwell is GORGEOUS. Amazing job!!!
thank you so much!
I can imagine now every time you walk through the door you expect your old entrance! That’s what’s happening to me and my entryway was completed three months ago! fab job I absolutely love that hutch too.
